ABOUT US
Located in the Mt Lofty Ranges in South Australia, the Mt Pleasant Natural Resource Centre (MPNRC) is a not-for-profit volunteer based centre that opened in 2000 with the vision of local community members who wanted to have a resource in the region to access information on natural resource issues. Since this time the MPNRC has continued to develop and expand due to the commitment and vision of volunteers, and is now a vibrant space full of activity. The Mt Pleasant Natural Resource Centre forms an integral part of the community, providing community capacity building in natural resource management and sustainability. The MPNRC services a diverse region, including the North and South Para Catchments, Upper River Torrens Catchment, Marne, Saunders and Reedy Creek Catchments.
How does it all work?
A committee comprising of volunteers elected from the local community, plus local government members and employees manages the MPNRC.
The natural resource centre coordinator, under the management of the committee:
- provides training and supervision for volunteers,
- organises forums and workshops on matters of interest to the local community,
- works with voluntary staff to carry out environmental monitoring, schools education programs and special projects as they arise,
- networks with other natural resource centres and advisors in the provision of referral services.
The MPNRC provides a focal point for spreading new and useful information for living within our natural environment and the creation of partnerships in land and environmental management. The MPNRC provides community access to equipment information and advice on a broad range of natural resource management issues as well as an accessible meeting venue and work space for community groups involved in natural resource management.
Natural Resource Management staff operating from the centre provide:
- small farms advisory services,
- land management advice and training services,
- landcare extension services and incentive funding programs,
- public library services.
How are we funded?
The MPNRC receives funding and in-kind contributions from The Government of South Australia Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board and the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board and The Barossa Council. And, most importantly, by the input of huge numbers of hours from dedicated volunteers.
Natural Resource Centres in the Mt Lofty Ranges
The Mt Pleasant Natural Resource Centre is one of 6 Natural Resource Centres across the Mt Lofty Ranges.
The first Natural Resource Centre in the Mt Lofty Ranges opened in 1995 as a Community Landcare Centre in
Willunga. Five additional Centres have since opened at Strathalbyn, Normanville, Mt Pleasant, Victor Harbour,
and most recently at Norton Summit.
The origins of each of the six Centres are varied.
Strathalbyn Natural Resource Centre originated from staff partnerships with groups such as
River Murray Catchment Water Management Board, Landcare, Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association,
Land Management Program and the Angas River Catchment Group. The Mt Pleasant Natural Resource Centre had its
beginnings in the vision of local community members who wanted to have a resource in the region to access information
on natural resource issues. The Victor Harbour Centre began as an initiative of the local council.
Despite the varied backgrounds, the Centres are all community driven and share a common commitment to encouraging and
promoting sustainable natural resource management within their communities. All Centres arose from a community need
and as such are ideally placed in the landscape for the provision of natural resource management information.
In 2003 the Centres formed a Natural Resource Centre Alliance - a working agreement between the Centres promoting
shared resources, ideas and expertise to more comprehensively meet the community needs of the greater region.
