Located in the Mt Lofty Ranges in South Australia, the Mt Pleasant
Natural Resource Centre Inc. (MPNRC) is a non-profit volunteer based
centre. The Centre opened
in 2000 with the vision of local community members who wanted a resource
in the region to access information on natural resource issues.
The MPNRC services a diverse region, including the North and South Para
Catchments, Upper River Torrens Catchment, Marne, Saunders and Reedy
Creek Catchments.
How does it all work?
A committee
comprising of volunteers elected from the local community and the Centre
Coordinator manage the MPNRC.
The natural resource centre coordinator, under the management of the
committee:
· provides
training and supervision for volunteers,
· organises
forums and workshops on matters of interest to the local community,
· works
with voluntary staff to carry out environmental monitoring, schools
education programs and
special projects,
· networks
with other natural resource centres and advisors in the provision of
referral services.
The MPNRC
provides a focal point for spreading new and useful information for
living within our natural environment and the creation of partnerships
in land and environmental management. The MPNRC provides community
access to equipment information and advice on a broad range of natural
resource management issues as well as an accessible meeting venue and
work space for community groups involved in natural resource management.
How are we funded?
The MPNRC
receives funding and in-kind contributions from The Government of South
Australia Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management
Board, the South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources
Management Board, and The Barossa Council.
And, most importantly, by the input of huge numbers of hours from
dedicated volunteers.
Natural Resource Centres in the Mt Lofty Ranges
The Mt Pleasant
Natural Resource Centre is one of 6 Natural Resource Centres across the
Mt Lofty Ranges.
In 2003 the
Centres formed a Natural Resource Centre Alliance - a working agreement
between the Centres promoting shared resources, ideas and expertise to
more comprehensively meet the community needs of the greater region.
